Over the past few years, permanent makeup (PMU) has exploded in popularity. From microblading and micro shading to eyelash extensions, more and more people are turning to PMU to enhance their natural beauty and simplify their daily makeup routine.

One of the main reasons these procedures have become so popular is their ability to save time and hassle in your daily beauty routine. With PMU, you wake up with perfect eyebrows and lashes every day, without having to spend time filling them in or applying false lashes. This is especially true for microblading and micro shading, which provide a semi-permanent solution to sparse or asymmetrical eyebrows.

Another reason people are turning to PMU is that it can enhance their natural beauty in a subtle, yet noticeable way. They can help to define your features and give you a more polished, put-together look without looking overdone or fake. This is especially true for those who prefer a more natural-looking makeup routine, as these procedures can enhance your natural beauty without making it obvious that you’ve had work done.

In this article, we feature Wanjiku Wanjama, an Internationally trained PMU artist who specializes in services such as Ombrè powder eyebrows (micro shading), nano brows, henna brows, brow tinting, brow waxing, facials, facebeat and eyelash extensions. Her shop, Beaut PMU, is located in Westfield Hub, Kileleshwa.

Micro blading is a technique that uses a special tool to create hair-like strokes in the eyebrow area, filling in gaps and creating a natural-looking shape that lasts for up to two years. Micro shading, on the other hand, involves using a small machine to create a shaded effect in the eyebrow area, giving them a more defined and polished look.

With years of experience in the industry, Wanjama has gained valuable insights into the world of PMU and the benefits it can offer. She shares her thoughts on the popularity of PMU over the years and why individuals should consider trying these semi-permanent makeup procedures.

"Contrary to its name, the word permanent is a bit misleading. The term "semi-permanent" is more accurate, considering that it does fade over time, and it's not a tattoo. The modern take on the method is to appear natural."

"What i normally want to achieve is an adjustment in shade that looks like it could be your own, so to do that, i implant the pigment into a very shallow layer beneath the epidermis, slightly to the upper dermis. It's very, very shallow, which is why it allows for fading over the course of two to three years," Wanjiku says.

"We work with high-quality pigments, which are shade-matched to be an exact reflection of the hairs on your eyebrows and lashes. Then I’ll use use a needle (very very tiny) to place pigmented granules. Every appointment begins with a consultation. I will always begin by speaking to my client on the end goal, and from there, I’ll map( draw a template of what is being done). Once the client approves, I’ll work with them to pick the proper shade, which gets placed right on top of the "sketch" after the appropriate areas have been numbed." She added.

"I use barrier films to wrap any potentially touched surfaces during treatment. Wrapping helps to prevent cross-contamination between clients and maintains a clean and safe environment for both me- the artist and the client."

"The needle cartridges for PMU machine and razor blades used are disposable and only meant for ONE use and are disposed in sharps containers clearly labeled BIOHAZARD INFECTIOUS WASTE and all the cotton wool, cotton buds and wipes used to clean as I go are disposed into a BIOHAZARD disposable plastic bag."

"All reusable instruments and equipment have to be properly sterilized after every session. These include, but are not limited to: the drawing pencils/marker, the PMU machine, the compass, the mirror, the phone because of taking pictures etc. After the procedure I will disinfect every surface and bed. I use a fresh bed liner with every client."

In addition to microblading, micro shading, and eyelash extensions, there are many other PMU services available. Lip blushing adds semi-permanent pigment to the lips to create a natural-looking tint or color, while permanent eyeliner adds pigment to the lash line to create a more defined and dramatic look. Scalp micropigmentation can be used to create the illusion of thicker, fuller hair, and areola reconstruction is often used for women who have undergone breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy. Beauty marks are also a popular PMU option that can enhance natural features or add a fun, unique element to one's look. With so many PMU options available, individuals can find a service that best fits their needs and enhances their natural beauty.

In conclusion, PMU procedures like microblading, micro shading, and eyelash extensions have become popular for their ability to save time and enhance natural beauty. Whether you’re looking for a way to simplify your daily beauty routine or achieve a more dramatic, eye-catching look, PMU might be worth considering.
